Jobs that didn’t exist 10 years ago…

I recently stumbled across a post that described jobs that didn’t exist 10 years ago and was fascinated to discover that what I do now is one of them. The extract below is from the original post. I don’t know about the chief listening officer, but the rest sound good…

App Developer

We’ve all heard the phrase, “there’s an app for that.” But the fact of the matter is that apps don’t just materialize out of thin air. It takes programmers weeks of work to put together the simple apps that we use everyday. Ever since our favorite smart phones hit the shelves millions of apps have been designed and downloaded and the market is growing. In 2011, Apple pulled in more than $15 billion from apps that merely shrunk down applications that were formerly only available on desktop computers for use on mobile devices. As the demand continues to increase for these apps, this means that new jobs are cropping up for programmers and developers capable of creating this software.

Market Research Data Miner

How many times have you been online browsing on your favorite store’s website only to have that same item you were looking at pop up in a Facebook ad a few moments later? Or how about the customized coupons that you receive when you go to the grocery store? The fact of the matter is that whenever a consumer interacts with an online retailer, whether it be by buying a product or by looking at a product online, the retailer is gathering information about your preferences. All this information that they collect is then analyzed by the market research data miner to help businesses predict future trends in the market or even for personalized advertising.

Chief Listening Officer

It is important for companies to stay up to date on what their consumers think about them and the products that they offer. The purpose of the Chief Listening Officer is to monitor the general consensus of consumers on various social media vehicles. As social media has grown to be more prevalent in everyone’s lives, the mode of communication between businesses and consumers has changed. Where before there was a solely one-way communication involving the business alerting the consumer to the newest products, the advent of social media sites has offered consumers a two-way communication. Users can state their opinions about new products and services and with the wealth of data that is coming in, the Chief Listening Officer needs to track and respond to the general feeling of a company’s target market.

User Experience Design

Because so much of how we work, play and interact with others is tech-based in this day and age, it is important that the time we spend on the computer is comfortable. A user experience designer is responsible for any kind of interaction a user has with a system. This includes the interface, the graphics, the design of the machine among various other components.
