First impression of IOS 7

The world upgraded to IOS 7 today so I thought I would take a few moments to give you my first impression. I currently have an iPhone 4 and I’m waiting for the release of the iPhone 5S before I upgrade. For the time being lets consider my iPhone 4.

image My iPhone 4 is three plus years old and in the world of smart phones, that is a life time. I find it quite amazing that it is still zippy and very functional. The new IOS7 runs well on the iPhone 4, which is no doubt partly because of the lighter UI widgets.

I find the UI clean but more simplistic than IOS6. It seems that more time was spent on animations.

When you swipe down from the top you get a quick view of your calendar for the current day with pending and missed appointments.

There are actually two areas now where you can swipe up from the bottom. If you swipe up on the right side of the screen you get quick access to the camera. When you swipe up from the middle of the screen, you get quick access to a calculator, camera, services, a timer and a flashlight.

There is a nice new do-not-disturb feature (moon) available from the swipe up that can be used when you go to bed.

You can adjust brightness and playback volume from the same screen.

When you select apps or groups of apps now the screens zoom in and out. The animations are a bit sluggish on the iPhone4 but they are definitely usable.

One of the best features of IOS7 is the ability to automatically update apps when you are WIFI connected. Stay tuned for more as I discover the pros and cons. So far, I’m impressed.
