It could be that I’m just getting old and I am no longer thinking clearly, but I’m going to make a couple of observations today and maybe you tell me where I messed up…
Observation #1: The USA has been all over Russia lately for their getting involved in the Ukraine. There is no doubt in my mind that Russia is pushing the envelope with their involvement, but some of the things I read just don’t make sense. The USA and the media would like us to believe that the downing of flight MH370 is some how Russia’s fault because the rocket that was used was manufactured there. If the USA where to apply those same rules to themselves, they would be responsible for most of the conflicts around the world. Did I miss something?
Observation #2: A few years ago I had the opportunity to travel to the middle east on business. While I was there, I managed to get out and tour some of the local land marks and talk to people. Being the shy person that I am, I asked people on both sides why there was so much fighting in that area. The thing that I took away from that experience was that both sides in the conflicts there are not rational. This last week the headlines everyday have talked about the aggression in Gaza. The part that the news conveniently leaves out are the number of causalities on both sides. If you look at those numbers, it’s pretty clear who needs to take a step back and re-evaluate their position. Oddly the media doesn’t report the news from that angle. Did I miss something here too?
The “physics of the future” book that I just finished last night makes a few predictions in the last two chapters about what life will be like in the next 100 years. One of the things that it talked about was how global communication would make it possible for you to know people on the other side of the world better than the people who live next door. It suggests that it will be harder for governments and media to put things over on an educated and connected public. The book suggests that it will be a lot harder to criticize and blow up people when you actually know them and have all the facts.
We are all so busy in our day to day lives that we tend to not worry about what our governments do on our behalf. We have the Internet, we are connected and if you want, you can find out what is really going on.
So, am I missing some facts on these two observations?
